Buhari seeks Senate’s confirmation of teachers new retirement age, years of service

President Muhammadu Buhari has sought the confirmation of the new retirement age and years of service of teachers in Nigeria by the Senate.

The President’s letter read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, at the plenary this Wednesday urged the Upper Chamber to consider and approve the harmonization of the teachers’ retirement age from 60 to 65 years and years of service from 30 to 35 years.

The letter read in part: “Pursuant to section 58(2) of the 1999 constitution as amended, I forward herewith the Harmonized Retirement Age of Teachers Bill 2021 for consideration by the Senate. The Harmonized Retirement Age of Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2021 seeks to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years and also increase the possible years of service from 35 to 40 years.
