One of Nigeria’s foremost military intelligence officers, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, has questioned the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in probing those who have been indicted to be sponsors of Boko Haram and quelling the current security situation in the country saying if ​“the government of Buhari is serious about putting an end to what we are seeing, then he must pronounce them (bandits/unknown gunmen) terrorist organisation”.

Speaking on TV on Wednesday, Olawunmi lamented that some of those who are sponsoring Boko Haram are now governors, ministers and are even in Aso Rock.

Olawunmi who decried the attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) said that many a time at all military formations in the country on Friday you see people troping in to pray (Juma’at prayers) and that when this is done those who intend to attack any of such formations will profile the place hence the place becomes susceptible to attacks.

He said, “In 2017, I carried out an investigation by the Minister of Defence that wanted me to check what was going on with the training and the security there (NDA). I remember I spent about a week in the NDA with the commandant and the staff but something struck me: every Friday, the gate of NDA is thrown open and everybody has access to pray in the mosque.

“On Fridays, you are going to see the same thing happening across all military formations in the country. If you go to Defence Headquarters, I served at the Defence Headquarters as the Deputy Director, Defence Administration, between 2015 and 2017, throughout my two years at Defence Headquarters, I received visitors twice because of the strict security architecture there but every Friday, the gate of the Defence Headquarters is thrown wide open for everybody to come in and observe Juma’at.

On the attitudes of the government as to dealing with Boko Haram and banditry in Nigeria, he said that those who are sponsoring the bandits and terrorists are in the government and that this government does not want to resolve this problem but escalating it because of tribal and religious sentiment.

He said: “Why can’t this government, if not that they are partisan, bring those people out for trial?”

He went on to say what the Federal government is doing is not attacking the center of gravity of the issue of Boko Haram and banditry and that buying super Tucano jets, changing of service chiefs are not the solution.

He said that Buhari is looking at the wrong side because the battle is not kinesthesis but political and our problem in Nigerians is religion and sociocultural

He also noted that the defense headquarters can not conduct any operation that is not sanctioned by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and that the DSS will not do anything except the Commander-in-chief’s body language shows that this is the direction he wants to go.

DSS he said has tremendous information on all those who are involved in the sponsoring of Boko Haram.

He further said that by 2023 if the new president takes over and wants to undo some of this evil seen in this country people will be surprised names that the DSS will bring out the information. The defense secretaries have the solution for the kinetic.

‘It’s not that they have problems it has to do with politics and those sponsors, people that feel that this country should be Islamized’ he said

“The DMI, DSS, and Police intelligence know the sponsors very well. The DSS knows very well, with tons of files, on those sponsoring evil in this country. The defense headquarters knows all those who are behind the terror going on in Nigeria today.

“The Commander-in-chief knows exactly what is happening but he is quiet. When a fish is about to get rotten, the head is the first”.
