CAF WCL: Okon blames ill-luck for Rivers Angels early exit

By Francis Ajuonuma
Coach Edwin Okon has blamed ill-luck for Rivers Angels early exit from the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League held in Cairo, Egypt.

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns emerged champions of the championship after beating Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana 2-0 in the final on Friday.Eight clubs featured in the finals.

Playing in Group B alongside Kenya’s Vihiga Queens, ASFAR of Morocco and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Rivers Angels could only master one win against Vihiga to finish third in the group and missed out from the semifinals, having lost their first two matches to ASFAR and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

Speaking after guiding his team to a 4-0 bashing of Kenya’s Vihiga in the last Group B fixture, Okon noted that Rivers Angels deserve better than they got in Cairo.

According to Okon, the defeats his team suffered against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR of Morocco were not the true reflection of the quality of his girls as they should have won those matches but wasted many scoring chances which he attributed to ill-luck.

“I’m happy with our victory against the Kenyans; though it didn’t come easy, I’m glad about the character we put out this time around.

“It’s painful to recall the previous two matches we played. These are matches we should have won easily based on the scoring chances that we had but we’re unlucky hitting the target; that’s football and it does happen.

“Honestly, the team isn’t as bad as people say, it’s just luck, it deserve better than what it got,” Okon said.
