Catholic elects Robert Prevost as first American Pope

Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new pope of the Catholic Church.
The 69-year-old is the first American pope in the 2,000 years of the church.
Prevost adopts the name Leo XIV.
Earlier, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signalling that cardinals locked inside have elected a new leader for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
