CJN swears in 68 New SANs

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 legal practitioners elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria as the 2026/2027 legal year begins.

The ceremony took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja, bringing together members of the judiciary and other stakeholders in the legal profession.

The Nigerian Television Authority announced the development in a news flash, with photographs and video footage of the ceremony.

The 68 lawyers were approved for elevation by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 174th plenary session in July 2026, under the chairmanship of Kekere-Ekun.

The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is one of the highest professional honours in the country’s legal profession. It recognises lawyers who have demonstrated distinction in legal practice, particularly courtroom advocacy, or made significant contributions to legal scholarship.

Before the conferment, the successful candidates were required to participate in a mandatory induction programme in line with directives issued by the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

The LPPC also reminded candidates of the professional rules governing publicity and congratulatory advertisements associated with their nomination and conferment, warning that violations could attract sanctions under the applicable guidelines and rules of professional conduct.

The swearing-in formally admits the successful candidates into the body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, with the rank carrying professional responsibilities alongside its recognition of legal distinction.
