COAS presents insurance cheques to families of fallen soldiers, unveils army expansion plan

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Monday presented Nigerian Army Personnel Insurance cheques to families of fallen soldiers and troops wounded in action, while also unveiling plans to expand Army formations across the country.

The presentation took place during the opening ceremony of the COAS First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites in Abuja.

The gesture, described as symbolic of the Army’s commitment to its personnel, underscored support for families of deceased soldiers and wounded troops who sustained injuries during operations.

Speaking at the conference, Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to troop welfare, operational effectiveness and national security.

He noted that the conference would provide an opportunity for military commanders to review ongoing operations, assess gains made in the first half of 2026 and develop strategies for the remaining part of the year.

According to him, discussions would focus on operational readiness, emerging threats and ways to improve effectiveness across various theatres of operation nationwide.

The Army chief commended officers and soldiers for their resilience and professionalism in confronting security challenges across the country, particularly insurgency and banditry.

He also paid tribute to fallen personnel, describing their sacrifices as critical to Nigeria’s unity and peace.

Highlighting ongoing transformation efforts within the Army, Shaibu disclosed that the service was expanding its operational footprint through the establishment of new formations nationwide.

He added that the Army was also increasing recruitment, improving infrastructure, upgrading healthcare services and enhancing welfare packages for personnel.

According to the COAS, arrangements for prompt medical evacuation for wounded troops within and outside the country remain a major priority.

Shaibu further stressed the importance of maintaining strong civil-military relations, noting that public support remains essential in achieving operational success.

He appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for continued support to the Nigerian Army through the acquisition of modern equipment, refurbishment of existing platforms and improved operational capabilities.

Earlier, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, said the conference was aimed at consolidating operational gains and setting a clear direction for the rest of the year.

He commended troops involved in counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations nationwide and urged participants to contribute meaningfully during deliberations.
