Convocation ceremonies: Bandele advocates holistic education for tertiary institutions in Nigeria

  By Babs Oyetoro
Anchor University Ayobo, vice chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele has called on Nigerian university authorities to embrace holistic education that will blend academic excellence with moral integrity and innovative thinking to preserve the fabric of education
in the country.
Bandele made this call during the combined convocation ceremonies held last week on the school campus in Lagos.
The head of the school administration reasoned that the university education modelled after British academic systems, which placed significant emphasis on literary academic excellence, research, and professional competence might not suffice today, given myriads of problems confronting the education system in the country.
He noted that the misconception that moral training was the responsibility of families, religious institutions, and cultural communities, not universities had further given rise to various social vices on the campus.
“The abandonment of morality in universities poses a significant threat to the stability, growth, and ethical values of any nation.
When governments, policymakers, and stakeholders fail to grasp the far-reaching consequences of neglecting moral education in universities, it can lead to profound societal and institutional breakdowns,” he warned.
**He stressed further: “Morality is essential for maintaining discipline and academic integrity. The absence of ethical standards in universities encourages malpractice, plagiarism, bribery, and favouritism. If governments fail to  acknowledge and act on this, educational institutions risk losing their credibility and the quality of graduates expected”.
The university don added that Anchor University’s unique model serves as a challenge to other Nigerian universities -both public and private – to adopt a holistic approach to education.
He, however, averred that the faith based university had demonstrated that moral training was not a hinderance to academic excellence but, rather, a catalyst for producing responsible and impactful individuals.
The former Ekiti State vice chancellor also hinted that the Anchor varsity had made tremendous progress to meet the school’s glowing aspirations; so much so that the school authority had to stop admission last session due to lack of space to accommodate fresh students.
Meanwhile,  Ifeoluwa Odunayo Babafemi in Industrial Chemistry from Chemical Science Department emerged overall best graduating student 2023/2024 academic session.
In all, other 47 students bagged first class across various departments from different faculties while 61 made second class upper division, 112  got second class lower as 41 students graduated with third class respectively.
