Be more vigilant, prayerful, Methodist Church urges Nigerians

The Methodist Church of Nigeria on Tuesday urged Nigerians to be more vigilant and pray for the country’s unity and prosperity.

The council of the church under the leadership of its Prelate, His Eminence, Dr Samuel Uche, made the call at a news conference at Bishop’s House, Marina, Lagos.

The call was sequel to a communique issued at church’s 38th Council of Bishop held in Calabar, Cross-River State.

The 38th Council of Bishops, which had the theme, ‘Watch and Pray’, was held from May 10 to May 17.

“We call on all people of God to pray fervently and be vigilant to ensure the security of lives and property.

“This is with the assurance that God will deliver the country from all challenges militating against it,’’ the church said.

The Methodist Church also lamented the wave of attacks on police formations in some parts of the country and urged government to make judicious use of intelligence to identify and bring all culprits to book.

“The punishment of sponsors of terrorism and brigandage should be top on the agenda of the government,’’ the council said.

The council commended the federal government on its timely steps in combating the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, while tasking Nigerians to ensure that they get vaccinated.

The church also said it would intensify prayers to end the pandemic.

“We salute the Southern Governors’ Forum for their anti open grazing stance.

“Global best practices in animal husbandry are by way of ranching and this ensures harmony between pastorals and farmers.

“Ranching, therefore, is the answer to the perennial and often fatal clashes between herders and farmers,’’ the church said.

It, therefore, commended the lead roles of Dr Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State, in signing into law the anti-open grazing law and recommend same to other states.

The church, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to passionately consider the issues raised by the southern governors.

On 2023 election, the church called on all politicians, irrespective of their political affiliation, to put the nation and collective interest of Nigerians above their personal consideration.
