Counter-Terrorism: Army commander harps on multi-agency collaboration

Maj.-Gen. Uwem Bassey, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Sokoto, on Thursday urged army personnel to sustain multi-agency cooperation to tackle security challenges.

Bassey, also the Force Commander, Operation Hadarin Daji, stated this at the closing of a 3-day training, Operations Planning Cadre 2022, in Sokoto.

The training is for officers of the Nigerian Army and representatives from other security agencies in the Northwest Zone.

The training had the theme: ‘Sustaining Capacity Building and Multi-Agency Cooperation: A Key to Defeating Insurgency and Terrorism in Northwest Nigeria’.

He said the effort was aimed at enhancing the operatives’ operational capability, adding that the operations in the zone comprised Hadarin Daji and Hadin Kai which covered Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi and Zamfara.

The GOC said that the training was timely considering the nature of operations, which the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies were currently undergoing across the nation.

“Militancy in the South, insurgency in the Northeast and banditry/terrorism in the Northwest; each form of insecurity has its own peculiar set of challenges.

“Operations require individualised training for security personnel operating in the various zones.

“Hence, the lectures in this cadre are particularly crafted to provide security personnel operating in the Northwest region with the necessary tools for facing security challenges peculiar to this region,” Bassey said.

He noted that participants were drawn from the armed forces and sister security agencies in line with the theme of the cadre.

“The theme could not have been more appropriate.

“Over the years, it has become quite evident that facing the numerous security challenges across the nation requires a wholehearted collaboration between all relevant stakeholders.

“This directly ties in with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, of having “a professional Nigerian army ready to accomplish assigned missions within a joint environment in the defence of Nigeria.”

The participants were from the Air Force, Police, Department of Security Services and other security agencies.

The exercise featured syndicate presentations embedded in group sessions with a series of lectures from experienced resource persons. (NAN)
