Court Orders Nigeria Police To Pay N3 Million As Compensation For Illegal Detention of Citizen

A Federal High Court, sitting at Gyadi Gyadi Court road in Kano metropolis, has ordered the Nigeria Police to pay N3 million as compensation for the illegal detention of one Dayyabu Auwalu.
The court in its verdict faulted the police over the detention of Auwal Dayyabu for four days in police custody without been arraigned before a court of law.
Counsel to Auwalu, Barrister Abba Hikima told the court that in July 2020, the applicant was apprehended by police operatives for allegedly obstructing the police from arresting his biological father.
Hikima further stated that police arrested and detained Auwalu for four days without filing charges against him before a law court, adding that the applicant was detained without a court warrant.
He told the court the action of the police had violated the fundamental rights of the applicant.
The court held that the police acted in a manner that violated the fundamental rights of the applicant.
The court ruled that the police should pay N3 million as compensation to the applicant, the court further ruled that the police should tender public apology to the applicant.
