Court remands driver for allegedly crushing 2 to death

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, remanded a 38-year-old driver, Emeka Nwokolo, in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly causing the death of two men.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice

Layinka, thereafter, adjourned the case till July 19, for DPP’s advice.

The defendant, who resides at Oworosoki, Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and causing death.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 2, on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Ikeja.

He said that the defendant, who drove his vehicle, with registration number: BEN 586 ZH, recklessly on the road, crushed two men to death.

“The defendant drove his Ford Econovan car dangerously on a public highway without considering other road users.

“He knocked down one Mr Adebamiwo Adebanjo, aged 55 and David Chijioke, 38, which led to their death.

“The defendant was consequently apprehended and taken to the station,” Ihiehie said.

According to him, the offences violate Sections 50(1) and 52 of Lagos State Road Traffic Law and Regulations, 2018.
