The Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF), brainchild of Global Citizen, an international advocacy organisation, and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority on Tuesday disclosed that they were seeking resources for COVID-19 vaccine equity.
Adebola Adeyinka, Head of Marketing, Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund, said in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday that one million Nigerians were being targeted for vaccination in the next 12 months.
Adeyinka said that some A-list Nigerian artistes perform at the Global Citizen Live event in Lagos where resources for the vaccine would be sought.
According to her, the event scheduled for Sept. 25 is part of a 24-hour global activation that will see artistes perform across six continents to help to rally citizens in demanding that governments, major corporations and philanthropists should work together to defeat poverty and defend the planet.
“This is by focusing on the most urgent, interrelated threats which include vaccine equity, climate change and famine that impact those in extreme poverty the hardest,” she said.
She said that Nigerian artistes donating their talents and time to help raise funds to boost vaccine equity through vaccination of one million people across the country included Davido, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, Made Kuti and Tiwa Savage.
“Other artistes taking part in this groundbreaking project include those from locations in Lagos, Rio de Janeiro, New York City, Paris, London, Seoul, Los Angeles, Sydney and more to be announced.
“In Nigeria, Global Citizen is working with the Lagos State Government to create a limited-capacity event to celebrate Nigerians working on the frontline in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, ” she said.
She quoted Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as saying that the state would be thrilled to be a part of the event.

“With the challenges of rising poverty, hunger and vaccine inequity facing Africa, we need businesses and governments around the world to respond to the call of citizens, stand in solidarity with the people of Africa, and commit to defending the planet and defeating poverty and inequality,” she quoted the governor as saying.
