The Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, has knocked the Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, over his comment that Lagos was founded by the Binis
The Oba of Benin made the statement during a visit to the state on Monday.
The Benin monarch said, “I cannot help but say that it is in history books that Benin founded Lagos. But when some people hear it now they go haywire that ‘what is the Oba saying?’ But it is true o. Go and check the records. Maybe not all of Lagos as we know it now but certain areas in Lagos – maybe the nucleus -was founded by my ancestors. The Oba of Lagos will say so.”
Reacting, Balogun of Eko said, “With all due respect, to the Oba of Benin, sir, may you live long, point of correction sir, Lagos was never founded by the Benin, your ancestors only came and forcefully imposed a transmission system on transits with the traders.
“Lagos was never founded by the Benin. I’m glad that you said some parts of Lagos, not all of the entire Lagos, Yes, you are right.
“Your ancestors settled on a small island that was called Eko, then, before the creation of Lagos and on this very island, they never created it.
“The island has been there before the arrival of your ancestors.
“If you want to talk about the Ashipas, the Ologukuteres, the Ados, the Erelukuti, they are limited to Isaleko, not Lagos in general.
“There are compounds and it’s called so I will urge you, sir, to revisit Lagos and take a tour into the place that your ancestors settled, which is called Isaleko, not Lagos.
“Nobody created Lagos, Lagos has been that island that has been in existence before.
“So sir, revisit Lagos for prosperity’s sake. This is History nobody can rewrite history,” he said.
