Delta: Police arrest inspector for shooting unarmed man during stop-and-search

A police inspector in Delta State has been arrested for allegedly shooting and injuring an unarmed young man during a stop-and-search operation.

The arrest of the inspector was confirmed by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, in a tweet.

He assured the public that the command is not taking the matter lightly and that justice will be served.

DSP Bright Edafe, on his X handle said: “This is a very sad event and I want to assure members of the public that the command is not taking this lightly.

“The inspector who shot has been disarmed and detained while we hope and pray that the young man recovers soon.

“Justice must be served I assure you all.

“The Nigeria Police Force does not and will never tolerate unprofessional conduct from any personnel.

“On this premise, The Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass ordered the immediate detention of the erring Police Inspector.

“The injured victim is being treated.

“Meanwhile, The CP urges members of the public to remain calm, as he guarantees Justice.”

It was gathered that the incident occurred along the East-West Road Ughelli, Delta State, when a police team flagged down a car for a routine stop-and-search.

During the interaction, an altercation ensued between the police officers and the occupants of the car, leading to the inspector firing his weapon.
