Disagreement over Water Resources Bill

The public reading of Water Resources Bill sparked a confrontation between two leaders of the House of Assembly.
Peter Akpatason, Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, had initially confirmed that the Water Resources Bill, though abandoned by the National Assembly, would go through public hearings, but Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, claimed no more public readings is necessary.
Fulata stated that the bill was publicly read by the Eighth National Assembly and it was pointless for the Ninth National Assembly to do the same.
The Water Resources bill is aimed at transferring the control of water from the states to the Federal Government, and some members of the National Assembly, especially from the Middle Belt and southern states, are not in favour of it.
But some National Assembly members from the Middle Belt and southern parts of the country vowed to resist any attempt to pass the bill.
