Don urges leaders to emulate “King David’s’’ leadership qualities

Mr Israel Uchenna, Music Lecturer at St. Albert the Great Catholic Major Seminary, Abeokuta, has urged all leaders to emulate the biblical David’s leadership virtues.

Uchenna, also the author of “Oratorio,” a book that critically analyses the biblical character of “King David”, made the call  in Lagos.

He urged Nigerian leaders to wake up to the call for quality leadership and service to humanity, challenging them to be courageous in leading the people to greatness.

According to him, leaders must be just and fair, exhibit fair treatment to all in the society and be de-tribalised, problem solvers, humble, forgiving and should seek God for divine direction.

“The state of the nation today is challenging, despite government’s effort in bringing such challenges to an end.

“We still have saboteurs with vices ranging from robbery, kidnapping, murder, injustice, carelessness, recklessness, among others.

“David as the King of Israel was one of the greatest leaders Israel had in spite of his flaws; this should be the kind of leadership style our leaders should display.

“There are a lot of virtues in the life of David that should be emulated by our leaders, be it political, religious or cultural leadership,” he said.

Uchenna said he was spurred to write the book ‘Oratorio’ due to his love for David and his leadership skills.

“I have written this “Oratorio” out of my love for this biblical character, King David, his life tells the story of many in our world today.

“Some of the moral young people will find in my Oratorio include: seeking God before we make decisions that affect our lives.

“Using the gift God has given to us to serve humanity, need to face one’s fears, essence of being a problem solver and loyalty to leaders.

“Like David’s character who happened to use his skills to solve problems, the young people need to acquire skills and use them to solve problems of humanity, thereby, serving humanity.

“Believing in oneself is quite important, as displayed by David who confronted Goliath and defeated him.

“So many youths have what it takes to succeed but have no confidence or courage, while others out of fear or peer pressure assume wrong responsibilities,” he said.

The music director, also a seasoned composer, said that choosing wrong steps by the youths or leaders would weigh them down, thereby, might not allow them achieve their goals of good leadership skills.

The author, in his quest for knowledge and excellence, broke record to become the first Nigerian writer to study and write on the Biblical character of David.

He said there would be an official premiere of the African written Oratorio, “David” on Oct. 3.

Uchenna said that the premiere would musically showcase close study of the biblical person of David, rising to prominence and staying relevant years after his death.
