Borussia Dortmund’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hans-Joachim Watzke, is ready to support a reformed UEFA Champions League with more teams and games, in order to prevent a European Super League.
Watzke said he favor’s what is named the Swiss Model, with 36 teams and 10 group games ahead of the knock-out stages, up from 32 teams and six group games.
“The deciding factor why I am in favors of the Swiss model is that it is the only way for me to prevent a Super League of international top clubs,” Watzke said.
“The top clubs are under immense pressure at the moment because the losses during the coronavirus pandemic are reaching an unbelievable dimension.
“So, a format had to be found to prevent the Super League.”
New venues for UEFA Champions League, Europa League games
Watzke insisted he would never support a closed competition, naming “the integrity of a competition a deciding factor.”
But he also said he was fine with clubs being awarded who have done well over a 10-year period.
