The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ebonyi State caucus of the National Assembly led by Senator Sam Egwu, the first executive governor of the state, has alleged that the Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has distributed pump-action and AK-47 rifles to thugs and cultists under the guise of vigilante/Ebube Agu security outfit in the state.
The PDP Ebonyi State Caucus raised the alarm on the deteriorating security situation in Ebonyi following the Umahi’s purported resort to arming the young men and some of his appointees on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja.
“The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, is misusing the Ebube Agu security out fit to proliferate arms in Ebonyi State. The world needs to know that his target is not criminal but political opponents. The Ebonyi State Government has distributed dozens of guns (Pump-action and AK-47 47) and ammunition across the state to individuals who are accountable to him,” Egwu stated.
The former governor, flanked by Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Michael Ama Nnachi and five members of the House of Representatives from the state, warned that every effort should be made by relevant security agencies to recover and mop up the arms and ammunition or leave law abiding citizens of the state at the mercy of gun-totting vigilantes /Ebube Agu.

He said the firearms were procured for the elements principally to intimidate and stifle the PDP in Ebonyi, adding that “it is for this reason that Ebonyi State has become the first and only state in the South East to inaugurate and arm the so-called Ebube-Agu.”
Neither the spokesmen to the governor nor the state police command could be reached for comments as at the time of this report.
