A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday alleged that security operatives attempted to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport shortly after he arrived from Cairo, Egypt.
El-Rufai said he declined to comply with the operatives’ request to accompany them, insisting they failed to present any formal invitation or arrest warrant.
“I refused to go with them because there was no official communication or legal basis for the action,” he said, alleging that security agents also seized his passport from an aide during the encounter.
The former governor, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the African Democratic Congress, described the incident as part of what he termed “increasing political intimidation.”
He further alleged that some of his associates had been arrested, accusing authorities of targeting politicians who refuse to remain in the ruling party.
El-Rufai warned that such actions could erode democratic norms and political freedoms, urging security agencies to uphold the rule of law.
As of press time, security agencies had not responded to the allegations.
