Enugu LG polls: Five feared dead as gunmen attack polling units

There was tension at two polling units in Enugu state during Wednesday’s local government council elections as armed men attacked the areas and killed five persons. The gunmen had invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

Activities were disrupted and electoral materials were also destroyed when the gunmen struck even as they chased away voters.

About five persons were said to have been killed, while some people escaped with matchet cuts and bullet wounds.

Two vehicles were also burnt in the incident.

An eyewitness who did not plead for anonymity said the gunmen were heard shouting that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East.

Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Daniel Ndukwe when contacted could not give a definite response on the incident.

The election however was peaceful in most parts of the state as voters massively turned out for the exercise across the 17 Council Areas in the state
