A former Super Falcon, Nkiru Okosieme, has tasked women footballers in the country to show more commitment, discipline and passion for the sport.
The three time winner of the African Women’s Nations Cup stated this in Benin, on Sunday, at the draws for the maiden edition of the Betsy Obaseki women football tournament.
Okosieme, who also participated in three Women’s World Cups, said with more passion and discipline to the game, the sky will be the limit for those that have chosen a career path in football.
She commended the wife of Edo state governor, Betsy Obaseki, the organiser of the tournament, for providing the platform that would further enhance the growth of women football in the country.
“I must commended the first lady of Edo, Betsy Obaseki, for laying another foundation for the growth of women football in the country.
“The participating teams in this tournament have no excuse not to perform, because the enabling environment has been created for them here in Edo.
“I implore you to be disciplined, dedicated and show more passion for the sport; when you do this, the sky will be your limit,” she stated.
Similarly, Gift Monday, an FC Robo player, who spoke on behalf of the participating teams, stated that with platforms like this, they will not regret choosing a career path in football.
The FC Robo player, who was the shinning star for the Super Falcons in the just concluded Aisha Buhari Cup, said the tournament would afford them the opportunity to showcase their talents to the world.
The media report that 12 teams drawn from the Nigeria women’s premier league and other clubs, are participating in the tournament which kicks off on Monday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.
Edo Queens, the host team, is drawn in group A with Rolly Angels, Heartland Queens and Naija Ratels.
In group B, Rivers Angels are grouped alongside Fortress Ladies, Royal Queens and FC Robo, while Bayelsa Queens, Confluence Queens, Sunshine Queens and Kaduna Queens are in group C.
The Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, and other notable sport men and women were present at the draws.
