The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Sagamu Chapter, Ogun, has tasked its members on proper maintenance of their vehicles before embarking on any journey.
The NURTW, former Deputy Financial Secretary in Sagamu, Alhaji Olayinka Banjo, made the call on Thursday in Ota, Ogun.
Banjo implored commercial drivers to ensure they put their vehicles in proper working condition adding that a taskforce had been constituted to ensure vehicles loading from the motor parks in the state were in good condition.
“The taskforce will not allow any vehicle that is in bad shape to load at the garage because people have associated the ’ember months’ with road accidents.”he said.
The NURTW chieftain commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for organising sensitisation campaigns across the state, particularly during the last quarter of the year to avert accidents.
He however appealed to the corps to extend the safety campaign to private drivers as well.
“It is not only the commercial drivers that commit offences on the roads, but private drivers commit offences that are worse than the transport drivers,” he said.

Banjo said that this would drastically reduce road crashes before during and after the festive period at the end of the year.
