Fatal crash claims one as wheat-laden truck falls on Otedola Bridge

Many road users and commuters traveling along the 7Up-Berger axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, yesterday were caught in a heavy gridlock after a truck loaded with wheat fell off the Otedola bridge, tipping its content down the bridge and leaving a yet-to-be-identified man dead.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASMTA), in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, described the incident as fatal, saying: “A fatal accident involving an upturned loaded (wheat) truck that has taken a lane on Otedola bridge inward Ojodu Berger. Traffic is a bit slow coupled with the flooded portion of the bridge.

“A fatal accident involving an upturned loaded (wheat) truck that has taken a lane on Otedola bridge en route to Ojodu Berger,” LASTMA posted at 8:40 am.

Later, the authority stated that as of 11 am, there was “good movement from Otedola to Berger Bus stop down to Kara-Opic & the return journey from Opic to Otedola is looking good”.

Also, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the accident occurred in the early hours of the day.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the truck driver was descending the hill from Mobil Filling Station inward Otedola, while trying to avoid collusion with another vehicle.

He added that in the process the driver lost control and crashed into the side of the bridge.

The driver’s compartment was found hanging down the bridge with some of the product (wheat) all over the road, blocking the entire route under the bridge inward Otedola Estate.

“A young adult male, one of the occupants of the truck, fell off the bridge and lost his life.

“The Agency’s crane has been dispatched for swift recovery of the impediment,” Oke-Osanyitolu said.
