FG confirms death of Nigerian medical graduate in Ukraine, offers support to family

The Federal Government has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Miss Nnani Adaobi Marian, following a Russian aerial attack in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The government also pledged to provide consular support to the deceased’s family while working with Nigerian diplomatic missions to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who said the government received news of Marian’s death with profound sadness.

According to the ministry, Marian, a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University, died from injuries she sustained during the attack.

The government described the incident as a painful loss and conveyed its sympathies to the deceased’s relatives, friends, colleagues and members of the Nigerian community affected by the tragedy.

“The Federal Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues and the Nigerian community affected by this tragic loss,” the statement read.

The ministry said it had activated diplomatic channels to verify details of the incident and ensure the family received the necessary assistance.

It disclosed that Nigeria’s missions in Ukraine and Germany were already engaging relevant authorities as part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the attack and provide consular services.

“The Ministry is in contact with the relevant authorities as well as Nigeria’s Missions in Ukraine and Germany to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident and to provide the necessary consular assistance to the family,” the statement added.

The Federal Government also renewed its appeal for an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, expressing concern over the continued loss of civilian lives.

It called on all parties involved in the conflict to embrace dialogue and diplomacy in resolving their differences, in line with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to protecting the interests of its citizens overseas, assuring that it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide support through the country’s diplomatic missions.
