Fight against Naira swap, Oshiomole urges Labour

Adams Oshiomole, former president of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and former governor of Edo State on Tuesday urged Labour to fight against happenings around the Naira swap policy of government and the Central Bank of Nigeria, NLC.

 

During the NLC 13th quadrennial delegates conference in Abuja, the former Labour leader charged the NLC to fight against the ongoing Naira swap which has caused untold hardship to Nigerians in both rural and urban areas.

 

“Why are we lamenting it instead of fighting it. I am calling on you to fight it. When I fought for minimum wage, I was fired as SPC chairman, but they cannot fire my conscience,” he boasted.

 

He said the N20,000 limit for withdrawal was unacceptable as the reality of prices makes it impracticable. The former Labour leader stated that for the price of a bag of rice, Nigeria’s staple food to to be N30,000 and withdrawal limit is N20,000 means that it would take a worker two days to queue to buy a bag of rice.

Oshiomhole who was booed initially by delegates for playing as a government representative called on the in coming president to get set to confront government, as according to him, whoever becomes president would need to be engaged to get results.

 

He also noted that the present N30, 000 minimum wage is grossly inadequate and that they should begin a process of wage increase engagements.

 

Similarly, Femi Falana, SAN urged the NLC not to abandon the issue of petroleum pricing to market forces.

He pointed out that the Petroleum Industry Act stipulates that government shall fix prices of petroleum products.

Falana also pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari is Minister of Petroleum and has not done enough to halt the price hike and scarcity of the products.
