Coach Finidi George has quit his job as Super Eagles coach after 32 days in charge of the team.
Finidi, who was unveiled as Super Eagles Coach on 13th of May on a year contract, took charge of the team’s recent two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo which ended 1-1 and Cheetahs of Benin Republic which the Eagles lost 2-1 as they sink down the Group C ladder with just three points from four matches.
The performance did not go down well with the country’s sports authorities, leading to the call of an emergency meeting by the Sports Development minister, Senator John Enoh with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and at the end of the meeting, the football house was directed to do all it can to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup fiesta.
However, on Thursday afternoon, the NFF in communique made available by its’ Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire announced that efforts are already on to employ a foreign Technical Adviser to take charge of the Super Eagles in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and remainder of the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers where the Super Eagles need to win all remaining six matches to stand any chance of qualification.
“The Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” the Communique states.
The exit of the former Enyimba of Aba coach was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account on Saturday.
He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
Also, a source within the NFF, who don’t want his name mentioned confirmed the development which did not come as a surprise to many as Finidi has been embattled since leading the Super Eagles to their first ever defeat in the hand of Cheetahs of Benin Republic in many matches.
Following his resignation early today the former Ajax of Holland and Real Betis of Spain star become the shortest servicing Super Eagles Coach.
