The Kaduna State is set to have seven neighbourhood sports centres to boost grassroots development before the end of the year’s third quarter, an official said on Tuesday.
The state’s Commissioner for Sports Development, Kabiru Mato, disclosed this on the sidelines of the North-West Zonal Stakeholders Meeting of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in Kaduna.
The Second Quarter North-West Sports Stakeholders Meeting was scheduled for between Monday and Wednesday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.
Mato said the state’s ministry had planned to construct the centres in densely populated areas of the state before it was hampered by the COVID-19 outbreak and paucity of funds.
“We had to approach members of the National Assembly from the state and appealed to them to construct these neighbourhood centres as part of their constituency projects.
“Sen. Uba Sani has already assured that he is building six neighbourhood centres in the Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone in six of the seven Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“Gov. Nasir el-Rufai also pledged to provide one neighbourhood sports centre in his area of a private residence at Ungwan Sarki.
”We are hoping that by September, these seven neighbourhood sports centres will be ready for usage,” he said.
The stakeholders meeting was aimed at giving an update on sports facilities and related activities at the state level.
It was also to have a review of the third and fourth quarters calendar of sports and related activities at the zonal level.
The Zonal Coordinator, Idris Abdullahi, said the meeting would also be used to discuss the hosting of proposed sports and related activities within the zone.
”It will also give us an insight into the sponsorship drive for zonal sports and related activities for the third and fourth quarters of the year.
“Apart from these, the meeting will also serve as an avenue for sensitisation and awareness briefs on health services available for sports men and women in the zone.”
