A farmer, Mr Onuoha Nnachi, and stakeholders in Ebonyi have urged the Federal and state governments to deepen agro-business investment to boost food security and strengthen the nation’s economy.
Nnachi made the call yesterday during the new yam festival, known as “Iyi Akpa Oke Ikeji,” held at El Dorado Village, Ezzi-Edda Community in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi.
He said the country had enormous agricultural potential, but needed greater attention to transform farming from a subsistence activity into a viable business that could generate employment and create wealth.
The farmer stressed the need for government at all levels to provide farmers with improved seedlings, modern agricultural inputs, accessible credit facilities and appropriate technology to increase productivity.
According to him, strengthening the entire agricultural value chain from production to processing, storage, transportation and marketing is critical to reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring a steady supply of food.
Nnachi called for the establishment of more agro-processing industries in rural communities to enable farmers add value to their produce and earn better incomes.
He said such initiatives would encourage more young people to embrace agriculture, reduce rural-urban migration and create opportunities for small and medium-scale agro-businesses.
On the new yam festival, Nnachi said that cultural events such provide an opportunity to celebrate the agricultural heritage of the people while drawing attention to the economic importance of farming.
He noted that the new yam festival was not merely a cultural celebration but also a reflection of the people’s dependence on agriculture for food, livelihood and community development.
He urged farmers to embrace modern agricultural practices, form cooperatives and explore opportunities in processing and other areas of the agricultural value chain.
Mr Joe Ekuma-Nkama, the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency in the forthcoming general elections, commended the people of Edda for promoting their culture.
Ekuma-Nkama, a former Minister of State for Health, pledged support for nation building and adequate representation for his constituents if elected.
Chief Charles Azuenya, Traditional Ruler of Ebunwana Edda Autonomous Community, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, thanked God for a bountiful harvest and prayed for more blessings for the people.
The “Iyi Akpa Oke Ikeji” festival attracted members of the community and other guests who celebrated the year’s harvest and the cultural heritage of Ezzi-Edda.
NAN reports that agriculture remains a major source of livelihood for many rural communities in Ebonyi, with farmers engaged in the production of yam, rice, cassava, vegetables and other food crops.
Other traditional rulers present included: Mr Obo Okorie of Umunna Community, Oko Ama of Etiti Edda, Ama Uzor of Owutu Edda Community and John Igwe of Ekoli Edda.
