Further arrests in Haiti as first vaccine delivery arrives

Two more suspects were arrested over the murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moise on Wednesday, one week after the killing, the Police said on Thursday.
The Police said they arrested two Haitians and that numerous rifles, pistols, magazines, and cartridges as well as three fragmentation grenades were found in their homes.
On the same day, the first 500,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines reached Haiti via the UN’s vaccine program Covax, the World Health Organisation announced.
The Moderna vaccine doses were donated by the United States.
The Caribbean nation has so far not started vaccinating its population against COVID-19 and the infection numbers have been climbing.

Moise, 53, was attacked and shot dead in the early hours of last week Wednesday at his private home in Port-au-Prince.
His wife was seriously injured.
Haitian police said 26 Colombian mercenaries and two Haitian-Americans carried out the killing and posed as agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
The two U.S. citizens and 18 of the Colombians were detained and three others killed.
Authorities are still searching for the remaining five Colombians and others suspected of involvement, including an ex-senator.
Police officers responsible for the president’s security are also being investigated.
Four of them are in custody in isolation, the Police said.
A Haitian-born doctor living in the U.S. was also arrested on suspicion of masterminding the killing.
The 63-year-old was accused of hiring the Colombians via a Venezuelan private security firm based in Florida in the U.S.
In spite of many suspects detained, many questions about the killing still remain unanswered.
