German court sentences man for attempt to derail train

A man who attempted to derail high-speed trains between Frankfurt and Cologne has been handed a prison sentence of nine years and 10 months, a German court said Monday.

The 52-year-old was found guilty of attempted murder for removing several screws from the high-speed ICE train tracks near the town of Niedernhausen in March 2020.

More than 400 trains passed by the dangerous location where the screws had been removed over a number of days before two train drivers became aware of the situation on March 20.

Prosecutors had demanded a sentence of 13 years in prison, while defence lawyers argued for acquittal.
