Handball: Over 80 Lagos schools compete for laurels at Opeifa Cup 2025

Over eighty-two schools in Lagos state are featuring at the 2025 edition of the Lagos state Secondary Schools handball championship tagged ‘Opeifa Cup 2025’, sponsored by former commissioner for education , Lagos State, Comrade Kayode Opeifa.
The championship which is in its 7th edition and 10th anniversary, has met its primary objective of discovering handball talents in Lagos State and by extension Nigeria.
It has actually produced stars that are already hitting it big in America, Europe and other parts of the world according to the event coordinator and former chairperson of the Lagos state handball Association, Mrs. Opeifa.
Besides, talent discovery, Mrs. Opeifa also hinted that Comrade Opeifa’s major objective for diving into the secondary schools handball sponsorship 10 years ago was to create a partway for Nigeria’s participation at the Olympic Games.
Despite the fact that Nigeria is yet to feature in handball events at the Olympics 10 years after, Mrs. Opeifa said the objective is still intact, hence hope is not lost as they enter the second phase in 2026.
Meanwhile, the quarter and semi-final matches in both the junior and senior categories will be played today being Thursday 30 October 2025 ahead of Friday’s finals.
