Man City appoint Enzo Maresca as Guardiola’s successor

Premier League club Manchester City have announced the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the club’s new manager following the exit of Pep Guardiola.

The club confirmed on Monday that the Italian has signed a three-year contract, which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2028/29 season.

Maresca returns to City for a third spell after previously serving as head coach of the club’s Elite Development Squad and later as one of Guardiola’s assistant coaches.

His appointment comes after successful managerial stints at Leicester City and Chelsea, where he strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s emerging coaches.

Reacting to his appointment, the 46-year-old described the opportunity to lead City as a dream come true, saying he was eager to begin work with a squad he believes is capable of continued success.

“Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.

“City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.

“This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations.

“The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability.

“I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City,” he said.

Maresca first joined Manchester City in 2020, taking charge of the club’s Elite Development Squad. In his debut season, he guided the youth side to the Premier League 2 title, finishing comfortably at the top of the standings.

Following a brief spell in charge of Parma in Italy, he returned to City in 2022 as Guardiola’s assistant and was part of the coaching team that secured the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League titles during the club’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2023.

He later left for Leicester City, leading the Foxes to the EFL Championship title and an immediate return to the Premier League in his only season at the club.

Maresca subsequently joined Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Conference League, secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League and later guided the Blues to FIFA Club World Cup glory in the United States.

Manchester City, in a statement announcing the appointment, expressed confidence in Maresca’s ability to lead the club into a new era after Guardiola’s departure.
