Hit-and-run driver injures Lagos teenager

A teenage boy has been hospitalised after a hit-and-run driver knocked him down while he was crossing the Onipanu Bus Rapid Transit corridor towards Fadeyi, Lagos State.

The incident occurred around 4:30pm on Wednesday, according to the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the LASEMA Cobra Team arrived at the scene two minutes after the crash and found the teenager with head and leg injuries.

He said the victim was given immediate medical attention before being taken to the Trauma Centre for further treatment.

The incident came hours after the Cobra Team responded to another crash involving a truck and a Toyota Camry opposite the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Onipanu, towards Fadeyi.

The early morning crash, which occurred around 5:10am, involved a HOWO truck with registration number T-36016LA and a black Toyota Camry marked FST-970KS.

According to the agency, preliminary findings linked the crash to reckless driving and speeding by the truck driver. No death was recorded.

Police and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted with traffic control and recovery operations, with both vehicles eventually taken to the Onipanu Police Station.

The latest hit-and-run incident also comes days after a female police inspector, Mercy Bassey, was reportedly killed by a hit-and-run driver while on route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos.

LASEMA urged motorists to avoid speeding and reckless driving and comply with traffic regulations, while pedestrians were advised to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossing points.
