Yesterday, the House of Representatives Committee on Finance laid before the House its report on the public hearing conducted for the four tax bills presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The bills, aimed at reforming Nigeria’s tax system and boosting government revenue, have sparked widespread debate since their introduction in October 2024.

Following a three-day public hearing, the expanded Committee on Finance held a closed-door retreat at the Transform Hilton to refine the submissions received from stakeholders.

The deliberations addressed concerns businesses, economists, and the general public raised regarding the potential impact of the proposed tax reforms.

At the plenary session, the Committee chairman, James Abiodun Faleke, formally presented the report to the House for consideration.

The bills will be scheduled for debate and possible passage later. However, their listing remains uncertain, as they were not included in the House’s notice paper for the current legislative week.

In anticipation of the bills’ consideration, the Committee also held a closed-door meeting with the House leadership on Tuesday.

The discussions were reportedly centred on strategies for ensuring a smooth legislative process and addressing any lingering concerns from lawmakers.

While the bill passage timeline remains unclear, the House is expected to focus on them in the coming weeks, given their significance in shaping Nigeria’s fiscal policies and revenue generation framework.
