Confusion and anxiety have gripped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State following conflicting media reports on the condition of its governorship candidate, Sir Jude Ezenwafor, who was attacked by gunmen in Abuja on Saturday.
Some online platforms reported on Sunday that Ezenwafor had died from gunshot wounds sustained during the assassination attempt in Wuse 2, Abuja.
However, his media aide, Mr. Richard Nwafor, dismissed the reports as “fake, misleading, and malicious,” stating that the candidate is alive and in stable condition at a private hospital.
“Hon. Jude sustained injuries in both legs and is expected to undergo surgery. He is stable and receiving adequate medical attention,” Nwafor said in a statement released through the Ifeabata Media Office.
The PDP swiftly condemned the attack in the strongest terms. National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the incident as “an assassination attempt orchestrated by desperate elements rattled by the popularity of the PDP candidate.”
Ologunagba alleged that the attack was part of a broader plot to stop Ezenwafor from contesting the November 8 governorship election, citing “credible intelligence” on plans for further smear campaigns.
“The attack is a reflection of the alarming insecurity under the APC-led administration,” he said. “The PDP urges the Inspector General of Police to arrest the assailants and their sponsors and provide enhanced security for our candidate.”
Despite the incident, the PDP vowed not to be deterred. “No amount of propaganda, violence, or intimidation will derail our mission to deliver good governance to the people of Anambra State,” the party stated.
Ezenwafor’s camp has urged the public to ignore unverified reports and continue to pray for his quick recovery.
