Lagos State Ministry of Housing, says it has recovered over N176m debts from defaulting allotees in it’s housing estates.
The Commissioner for Housing in the state, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, made this known at his 2024 Ministrial media briefing held at the weekend in Lagos to commemorate the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Highlighting some of the progress achieved by his ministry, Akinderu-Fatai said the debts were recovered from defaulting allotees in Millennium Housing Estates, Gbagada; Baba Omojola Housing Estates, Gbagada; Millennium Housing Estate, Oke-Eletu; Emeka Anyaoku Housing Estates, Ikeja, and Millennium Housing Estates, Ojokoro.
“Through an improved revenue generation machinery, the ministry was able to collect outstanding debts from defaulting allotees in Millennium Housing Estates, Gbagada; Baba Omojola Housing Estates, Gbagada; Millennium Housing Estate, Oke-Eletu; Emeka Anyaoku Housing Estates, Ikeja, and Millennium Housing Estates, Ojokoro. We have been able to recoup the sum of 176,617,500.00 naira only,” he stated.
The Commissioner frowned at the attitude of some of the residents in the estates over their noncompliance to the rules and guidelines of the estates and threatened to revoke their allocations.
“Residents of some of the ministry’s estates do not comply with the extant rules put in place to promote peaceful coexistence of all allotees in the estates. These include non-payment of service charges, bypass of electric meters, cult activities amongst others. Some residents are also involved in criminal activities.
“We must let you know that the ministry has resolved to act resolutely by revoking the allocations of allotees who do not comply with agreements signed at the point of release of homes,” he warned.
Akinderu-Fatai, also revealed that over 1600 homes will be released soon for citizens of the state to apply for the ownership.
“Going forward, the citizens of the state should expect the release of more homes – over 1600 homes, as many of our ongoing housing schemes will be compeleted and delivered to the people in due course. The schemes located in five administrative divisions of the state will be turned to bubbling cities in line with our mandate to the people,” added, while commending Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support for the housing sector in the state.
“At this point, we want to thank the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his visitionary leadership and support for the housing sector in the state. His special devotion to housing development over the years has earned him many deserved awards and accolades. We are grateful to you and pray your legacies in the sector will remain as great testimonies of your good governance.
