
Newly nominated Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya has said that he needs the cooperation of Nigerians, the Navy, Airforce to succeed in the fight against the worsening insecurity in the country
He stated during his screening by the House of Representatives joint Defence committee.
Major General Yahaya solicited cooperation from the armed forces, other security services, and the citizens, admitting that cooperation from all and sundry is what it takes to succeed in the fight against insecurity.
The CoAS said he was going to deploy the experience he acquired through various training and postings in the army to tackle insurgency in the country, adding that he was prepared for the task ahead.
Meanwhile, the House has charged the Armed Forces of Nigeria on the need to adopt innovative measures to curb the general insecurity, killings, and wanton destruction of property in the country.
Chairman, House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson said during the screening exercise, that he was optimistic that if the new Chief of Army Staff is confirmed he will do everything possible, working with other service chiefs, to bring the incessant killings in the country to an end.
“You will agree with me that Nigeria deserves a re-invigorated Armed Forces that is robust, well-trained, adequately equipped, efficient and fully motivated to protect Nigerians from the devastating effects of terrorism and other security challenges in the country.
“This screening exercise comes at the heels of Nigeria’s 22 years of uninterrupted democratic experience. I must say that the relationship between the National Assembly and Armed Forces of Nigeria has progressively improved as the parliament continues to exercise the necessary democratic oversight of the defence sector.”

He reiterated the firm resolve of the 9th House of Representatives, ably led by the Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and particularly, the Committees on Defence and that of Army, to continually ensure a secure, peaceful and prosperous country for all Nigerians.
According to him, the House of Representatives will continue to work with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to achieve this”, the lawmaker added.
Earlier, the Minister of Defence, Retired Major General Bashir Magashi, who was represented by the permanent secretary in the Ministry, Musa Istifanus, said the partnership between the National Assembly and the Ministry of Defence will further help to improve the security of the nation.
