Impeachment : No backing down, says Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has said the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu is progressing in line with constitutional provisions.

In a press release issued on Thursday, January 9, 2026, the Assembly stated that the process, which commenced on January 8, was being carried out pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The statement was signed by Hon. Dr. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints.

According to the House, notices of allegations of gross misconduct against both the governor and the deputy governor have been formally forwarded to them by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule. The lawmakers said they are currently awaiting the responses of the affected officials.

The Assembly emphasized that it is constitutionally empowered to act in the interest of the people and to check any infractions by the governor, deputy governor, or other state officials, adding that it remains duty-bound to discharge that responsibility.

The House also dismissed reports suggesting that the impeachment process has been halted or discontinued, describing such claims as false and misleading. It accused some individuals and media platforms of attempting to spread misinformation and create disaffection between the legislature and the public.

“With the leave of the Speaker, we call on the public to disregard these narratives, as the process remains firmly on course,” the statement said, stressing that the Assembly would not be deterred by what it described as “cheap blackmail or threats.”

The lawmakers thanked the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support and expressed appreciation to stakeholders and leaders at all levels. They also extended goodwill to advocates of democracy, reaffirming their commitment to the Nigerian democratic project.
