Insecurity: ICT agencies taking steps to address challenges

Agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, have restated their commitment towards a collaborative effort to address insecurity in the country.

The agencies made their commitment on Monday at the maiden conference of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA), Abuja Chapter.

The conference with the theme, “Digitisation as an Enabler in Tackling Insecurity in Nigeria”, was targeted at projecting the interventions of the ministry towards addressing insecurity.

Prof. Muhammad Bello, Managing Director Galaxy Backbone Limited, said the agency had developed a three-tier data center and infrastructure to enhance the protection of government data always.

Represented by Mr. Adamu Umaru, Executive Director, Finances, Bella said “we keep reevaluating our system, reviewing our policies to meet up standards of storing data and to avoid infiltration to our network.

“This is to ensure that the data of organizations we serve are safe and we also provide intelligent information when required.”

Dr. Aliyu Aziz, Director-General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), said fighting insecurity required a combination of human capability and technology.

Represented by Mr. Kayode Adegoke, Head, Cooperate Communications, Aziz highlighted the importance of the National Identity Number and SIM linkage to ensure mobile lines were registered for security checks.

Among the initiatives to address problems of insecurity, he mentioned, were the adoption of the Tokenisation policy, Contactless Biometrics Solution, and others.

He urged Nigerians to link their SIMS, adding that the deadline was Dec. 31.

Dr Abimbola Alale, Managing Director, Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), said the agency had the only communication satellite providing information and data in the sub-Saharan Africa region.(NAN)
