Insecurity: IGP deploys DIGs to geopolitical zones, orders inter-state patrols
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to their respective geopolitical zones with effect from Monday, 15th June 2026.
The move is part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen national security coordination.
The announcement was made during the monthly conference with strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid on Wednesday, the deployment is aimed at bringing leadership closer to operational theatres and improving accountability across all levels of policing.
“The deployment is aimed at bringing strategic leadership closer to the field, strengthening accountability, and ensuring prompt response to emerging security threats,” Placid said.
He explained that the DIGs will work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police within their zones to improve supervision and ensure effective implementation of policing directives nationwide.
Placid added that the restructuring is designed to enhance coordination and operational oversight across the country’s policing architecture.
In addition, the Inspector-General of Police directed all Commissioners of Police to establish coordinated inter-state security operations tagged “Handshake Patrols” with neighbouring commands.
“The initiative is designed to strengthen intelligence sharing, improve operational communication, and facilitate joint responses to crimes that cut across state boundaries,” Placid said.
He noted that criminals often exploit jurisdictional gaps by committing offences in one state and escaping into another.
According to him, Commissioners of Police have been instructed to maintain regular engagement with neighbouring commands and conduct joint patrols along major entry and exit routes.
Placid said the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to intelligence-led policing, inter-agency collaboration, and strategic coordination aimed at improving public safety and protecting lives and property across the country.
