Journalists from several media houses and their guides escaped being killed on Thursday in the island town of Bonny, Rivers State when feuding youths attacked them while on official duty.

The journalists escaped in a dugout canoe that ferried them across a creek to safety at Coconut Estate, said Mr. Ignatius Chukwu, the South-South/South-East Manager and of Businessday newspaper.

The journalists had been invited over by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited as the company prepared for the take-off of the $10 billion Train 7 project. But they met feuding youths of Bonny and Finimah, fighting over entitlements of the N3billion community development grants from NLNG to the host communities.

The feeding youths who were at the gates of the company attacked the journalists as the bus that brought them arrived at the gate.

Mr. Chukwu said, “Some of our bags burnt in it (the bus). We escaped through a back creek in a sinking wood boat that sank through the short journey to the other side of Bonny called Coconut Estate. God is great indeed.”
