The Engineering firm was contracted to implement the construction of Section 1 of the road , from Lagos to Sagamu Interchange.
This section, according to Dr . Richter, has the highest traffic volume in Nigeria, with high volume commerce and trade as well as heavy volumes of commuters who travel either to and from work or for religious activities on a daily basis.
He added that the heavy traffic volumes necessitated the expansion of the original design of the highway to three lanes in both directions, with Julius Berger’s scope of works comprising rehabilitation ,extension of approximately 43km dual carriageway; rehabilitation of existing bridges; construction of new drainage system; construction of three new flyovers; two toll gates as well as construction of 10 pedestrian bridges.
He admitted that the company encountered enormous challenges in the course of the job but noted that notwithstanding , there has been immense progress and greater momentum to make completion, delivery and commissioning in due time
Richter stated “since funding through the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund, PIDF has been implemented, the progress (of work) could proceed unhindered.”
On the challenge of traffic management on the road, Richter said, “Julius Berger has implemented highly detailed traffic management planning”
He said they put in place 24 hours emergency response, which has resulted to, “a reduction in response time by means of well-established lines of communication between the various (government) agencies.”
In addition Julius Berger also established functional collaborations with the Federal Road Safety Corps, LASTMA and TRACE to manage traffic during peak times
