JUST IN: Court sacks Cross River lawmakers for dumping PDP

Tobi Adebayo
A Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked some members of the Cross River State House of Assembly for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Recall that the PDP had filed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/975/2021 following the defection the state Governor, Ben Ayade and twenty lawmakers in 2020.

In a sitting presided by Justice Taiwo Taiwo on Monday, the court ordered the state Assembly Speaker and 19 other lawmakers including two House of Representatives members, to vacate their seats immediately.

Taiwo also ruled that all salaries and allowances paid to the lawmakers from the period of their defection till date should be forfeited.

“The argument of the lawmakers that there was rancour in the PDP which necessitated their defection to APC was a ploy to mislead the court.

“It is disheartening that politicians in the country treat citizens as if they do not matter once they get into office. We cannot continue in sin and expect grace to abound,” the judge said.
