The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted an order of interim injunction restraining the Edo State Electoral Commission from conducting Local Government Council elections in the state.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in a judgment delivered on Tuesday, granted the motion on notice filed by one Irene Enike Sylvester and 3 other applicants.
The plaintiffs are challenging the validity of the Edo State electoral law which allows for the holding of elections within 15 days from the date of the publication of notice for the conduct of the election.
The defendants include the Edo State Electoral Commission Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attorney-General of Edo State, Speaker, Edo House of Assembly, Clerk, Edo House of Assembly, People’s Democratic Party, and its chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.
Justice Taiwo added that the alleged infraction in the Edo State electoral law vis-a-vis the Electoral Act 2022, as canvassed by the applicants, is worth looking at by the court.
