Northern governors insist on Southern presidency as APC NWC picks Lawan as consensus candidate

Tobi Adebayo
Northern Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reiterated their earlier decision to support a Southern candidate to emerge as the flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election.

This comes as the National Working Committee of the APC announced the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan as the consensus candidate for the party.

The governors had met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday to discuss the consensus candidacy among other issues in the party.

However, the Chairman of the APC. Abdullahi Adamu had announced Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate.

Speaking after the meeting with President, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong had expressed regret that the communique from the meeting held on Saturday, June 4th, about their intention to back a Southern candidate had leaked to the public before Buhari knew about it.

According to El-Rufai, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state had walked out of the meeting with President Buhari as he disagreed with the zoning of the presidency to the South.
