Kanam attack: Over 78 persons feared killed, several abducted in Plateau

More than 78 persons have been feared killed in an attack on Kanam Local Government in Plateau State.

According to residents who spoke with ThisNigeria, gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded Kukawa, Gyambawu, Dungur, Kyaram, Yelwa, Dadda, Wanka, Shuwaka, Gwammadaji and Dadin Kowa villages of Garga in Kanam.

An affected resident, Mr Fanya Ali, who spoke to our correspondent, said that 36 persons were killed in Kukawa, 24 were killed in Gyambau, 8 persons were killed in Kyaram while 10 persons killed in Wanka.

Ali added that there were dead bodies in bushes whose number had not been ascertained as of time of filing this report.

He also revealed that several houses were burnt by the gunmen.

Another resident, Sariki Bitrus told ThisNigeria that Over 70 persons were abducted during the attack.

He added that most of the abducted victims were women and children.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Ubah Gabriel, who spoke to our correspondent, said that the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

He stated that security personnel had been deployed to the affected communities.
