Kano State Government has thrown its weight behind the North-West Energize Commercialization Now (ECoN) initiative launched by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as a major boost for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
Speaking at the launch in Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the programme aligns with the state’s vision of building a technology-driven economy.
“This programme aligns with our policy of developing a technology-driven economy,” Yusuf said.
He noted that the initiative would enhance commercial activities, support local industries and improve livelihoods across the state.
“It will significantly boost commercial activities and strengthen local industries,” he added.
The governor also assured full support for the successful implementation of the initiative.
“Our administration is committed to ensuring its sustainability and success,” he said.
Earlier, the First Lady said the ECoN initiative is part of efforts to tackle energy challenges facing businesses, particularly SMEs.
“This initiative is part of our broader effort to address energy constraints affecting businesses,” Tinubu said.
She stressed that improved and sustainable energy supply is critical to productivity and economic growth.
“Reliable energy is essential for boosting productivity, supporting entrepreneurship and driving economic development,” she added.
Tinubu further highlighted Nigeria’s innovation potential, noting that ideas continue to emerge from universities, research institutions and young people.
“Nigeria is rich in creativity, and our innovators are making global impact,” she said.
She added that the initiative would help create jobs, grow enterprises and increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the programme would expand energy access and accelerate enterprise development across the North-West region.
