Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has approved the release of ₦235.1 million to implement the promotion of 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for the January and July 2026 promotion cycles.
The approval covers personnel across the state’s 44 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) and is expected to address the latest promotion obligations. The administration previously tackled inherited backlogs affecting thousands of education workers.
The approval followed a request by the SUBEB Executive Chairman, Yusuf Kabir, for the release of ₦235,116,339.09 to implement the promotions and corresponding salary adjustments for eligible personnel.
In a letter dated September 2, 2026, the Board said the affected workers had completed the required promotion processes, including eligibility verification and salary adjustment calculations.
SUBEB said timely implementation was critical to boosting staff morale, strengthening career progression and improving service delivery across the state’s basic education system.
The Board said the intervention was particularly significant given the size of the workforce, noting that approximately 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel serve under SUBEB across the 44 LGEAs.
It disclosed that the administration inherited promotion backlogs, including arrears covering seven years as well as another backlog of about one-and-a-half years.
According to the Board, Governor Yusuf had previously approved and implemented the outstanding promotions, an intervention it said had improved staff morale and restored confidence among education workers.
SUBEB said the latest promotion exercise followed the completion of necessary administrative processes, including verification of eligible staff and computation of the resulting salary adjustments.
The approval was subsequently ratified by the State Executive Council, paving the way for the release of the funds and implementation of the promotions.
The Board described the development as part of the administration’s commitment to the welfare of public servants and the strengthening of the basic education sector.
With nearly 19,000 personnel now covered by the latest approval, the implementation represents another major personnel intervention in a sector employing one of Kano State’s largest public workforces.
The development is expected to provide the affected workers with their corresponding career advancement and salary adjustments for the 2026 promotion cycles.
