Kano tailor sews for 120 hours to make school uniforms for pupils

A Kano-based tailor, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has completed a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon to produce school uniforms for pupils, with his Guinness World Records attempt awaiting verification.

The feat was highlighted on Friday by the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, who praised Basari for dedicating five days to sewing for children in need.

Describing the effort as an example of resilience and determination among young Nigerians, Musawa said Basari’s initiative, tagged Sew for the Nation, deserved recognition even as the record attempt awaits official confirmation.

“Most of us struggle to stay awake for one night. He gave five days,” the minister said in a post.

She noted that the achievement also drew attention to the economic potential of Nigeria’s fashion industry, which she described as the largest employer within the country’s creative economy.

According to Musawa, the fashion sector supports an estimated 800,000 Nigerians, most of whom are young people working for themselves.

She added that the government’s industry mapping indicated that fashion design could generate more new jobs by 2030 than any other creative subsector.

Musawa said the government’s responsibility was to ensure that designers such as Basari had better access to finance, markets and professional training to expand their businesses and create more employment opportunities.

She congratulated the tailor, describing his effort as an example of what young Nigerians could achieve through determination and a willingness to persevere.

The Guinness World Records verification of Basari’s 120-hour sewing attempt remains pending.
