Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has suspended his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State as a national tragedy that demands sobriety and compassion rather than political celebration.
Kefas, who was scheduled to move to the APC on Wednesday formally, said the incident has once again exposed Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, stressing that it would be morally insensitive to proceed with a political rally while families and communities are in deep anguish.
“In light of the deeply troubling kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
“At a moment when our nation is confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics.”
The governor extended sympathy to the families of the abducted students, the government and people of Kebbi State, and to President Bola Tinubu, noting that the situation demands urgent national attention and coordinated rescue efforts.
Kefas added that, as a leader who prioritises security, education, and the protection of vulnerable citizens, suspending all major political events is “the morally right and nationally responsible measure” until the situation receives a decisive response.
He urged security agencies to intensify rescue operations and called on Nigerians to remain calm, prayerful, and united. A new date for his defection will be announced after consultations and when considered appropriate.
Meanwhile, the APC has officially postponed the reception planned for Kefas. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party said the decision was made in honour of members of the armed forces and civilians killed by terrorists, and in respect for victims of recent abductions, particularly the students in Kebbi State.
“We salute the courage and sacrifices of our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line in defence of our liberty and security,” Morka said. He expressed deep commiserations with affected families and emphasised the party’s prayers for the safe return of the abducted girls.
Morka reiterated that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to stamping out insurgency and banditry across the country and to ensuring that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice.
